Aluminium Lift Attachment and Rotation Jig
Andron Handling was approached to provide a lightweight aluminium lift attachment and rotation jig for the lifting and assembly of a large disk 3.2m diameter weighing 1.8T.
Andron was approached by a prestigious customer to support with the assembly of their complex and innovative product. We advised that a bespoke lightweight aluminium lift attachment and rotation jig would be the best solution.
The Technical Challenge
There were a number of unique technical challenges requiring Andron’s expertise in this area:-
- The large disk was 3.2m in diameter x 0.7m thick and weighing 1.8T
- There was minimal room at the customer site for storage
- The assembly area had low head room in which the large disk had to be raised and rotated.
The Andron Solution
Our bespoke solution consisted of 3 pieces of equipment which comprised the lightweight aluminium lift attachment.
An aluminium handling and rotation frame was created to attach to fixing points around the disk. This had to be light weight and easily disassemble for storage. The frame required a rotation point mounted on each side that was easily connected to the turning frame and 3 lifting points, to allow the frame to be lifted by a bespoke spreader. The aluminium lifting frame can then also being used for final assembly. To enable this the frame has 6 transport wheels on jacking legs.
The rotation jig was designed to hold and rotate the aluminium handling and rotation frame. It can be disassembled into 3 pieces enabling easy storage and fast assembly. The rotation of the aluminium handling and rotation frame was achieved by a 30:1 gearbox with hand crank with anti-backlash. For extra safety and to allow the component to be set at a defined angle an index wheel with spring plunger was used. Lockable rotation castors, wheels with brakes and fork lift locations were designed in to the rotation jig.
To transport the lightweight aluminium lift attachment and rotation frame (with disk) a tri legged lifting attachment was supplied. This was designed for reduced access over the final assembly position. It has been designed to attach to any safety hook and has lifting chains to connect to the aluminium handling and rotation frame.
